About John Donohue

On January 1, 2017, John Donohue, a former New Yorker editor and cartoonist turned self-taught artist, launched the website All the Restaurants, his life-long project to draw all the city’s eateries. Working in ink while standing in front of a place (like a musician cutting a record in one take) and adding a single color at home later, Donohue captures the lasting emotional connection that restaurants evoke. He makes all his fine-art, limited-edition prints in lots of 365, so each one becomes a beautiful reminder of how our days are limited.

Since the start of this project, he has used his art to support hunger-relief organizations. For the first year of the pandemic, he donated 50% of his profits to the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation’s emergency Covid-19 relief fund, and he continues to support restaurant workers to this day. Drawing puts Donohue in the present moment unlike any other activity, and his passion for his art has inspired countless people to collect his work. His prints are in homes across the city and the country and as far away as South Africa, Australia, and Hong Kong.

In 2019 Abrams published “All the Restaurants in New York,” a stunning hardcover assortment of his New York drawings. Worldwide demand was so high for his work that a second book of drawings from abroad followed this spring. “A Table in Paris” is a sleek and elegant collection of his drawings from the City of Light, which he visited twice in the summer of 2019. The Paris book also features travel tips and insights from Ruth Reichl, Lindsey Tramuta, Alec Lobrano, Maira Kalman, and other locals, visitors, and experts on Parisian life. A London book is in the works, too, after a pair of trips there in 2018.

Before turning to art, Donohue had a long career in journalism. In 2011, Donohue edited “Man with a Pan: Culinary Adventures of Fathers who Cook for their Families,” a best-selling anthology featuring recipes and essays from Mario Batali, Mark Bittman, Mark Kurlansky, Stephen King, Jim Harrison, and many others. He lives in Brooklyn and draws at least twice a day.

About ROAR

ROAR (Restaurants Organizing Advocating Rebuilding) is a community of hospitality leaders advocating for New York City’s independent restaurant industry and creating a path to a sustainable future.

Started in March 2020 by a group of industry professionals, impassioned to step up and fight for the survival of our industry and the people that make it so special, ROAR works in a multitude of ways to accomplish its goals.

ROAR established the employee relief fund to support NYC’s restaurant workers facing unemployment and rampant uncertainty with cash assistance. In partnership with Robin Hood, a 501(c)3, using its back end infrastructure and processing, ROAR was able to open the fund very quickly to begin getting relief and assistance to those who needed it as quickly as possible. To date, ROAR has raised over $3,000,000 dollars to support over 5,000 laid off NYC restaurant workers facing incredible economic hardship as a result of the pandemic. Along with partners such as DoorDash, Credit Suisse, Lingua Franca, San Pellegrino and some incredibly generous friends of the restaurant industry, ROAR has been able to give thousands of $500 cash grants to the people responsible for making our businesses and entire communities the warm havens they’ve always been.
